Urban Climate Action

Assisting local and regional governments in developing activities within the framework of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement to enhance climate action in urban Southeast Asia.

Welcome to our initiative, a pioneering effort aimed at developing pragmatic approaches for the implementation of Article 6 mitigation activities in urban settings.

Central to our efforts is supporting city and provincial governments by enhancing local and national capacities and conceptualizing urban climate activities, leading to ready-to-implement concepts in Southeast Asia. Our initiative extends to engaging with international stakeholders to foster opportunities under the Article 6 framework, leveraging additional finance for urban mitigation initiatives.

ASSESSMENT

Indonesia and Thailand were selected as partner countries to participate in this initiative. City emissions profiles and climate policy instruments were assessed in order to identify activities suitable for Article 6 that could also lead to the generation of Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs).

DEVELOPMENT

A total of three greenhouse gas emissions reduction activities were selected due to their contribution to urban climate change mitigation, sustainable development co-benefits and Article 6 potential.

Stakeholder consultations were conducted to understand challenges, oportunities and leverage local and national capacities.

Activity technical documents are under development.

OUTREACH

During the outreach phase, interaction with potential international buyers will inform next steps towards implementation for local partners. Local and international capacity building is also a key component, informing relevant stakeholders about the opportunities and requirements of Article 6 to leverage additional climate finance in Southeast Asia.

Building capacity for Article 6

Recognizing the importance of capacity building across local and national stakeholders for effective international cooperation, our project is committed to enhancing the understanding and implementation of Article 6. To support this goal, we have curated a dedicated section on our website, providing key information and resources on Article 6.
